In the case of Miss Universe, the voters are the judges, which decides the fate of who wins, and who loses. As for the contestants, they are like the political candidates. As like in political cases, Miss Universe consists of a lot of controversy. Many people have their opinions and even the “favorite” may not win. It is up to more than just popularity. In the Miss Universe case, many are greatly upset by the outcome but, this is quite similar to politics because many people are upset by the outcomes of the elections, as well. Yet, in these situations everyone cannot be all happy because everyone’s opinion is different. This is relevant to history because throughout history elections were taken place and there was high controversy. Presidential elections took place and were quite similar to how they are today. Also, there was controversy on it. However, like the miss universe pageant there was controversy between sides, in the Miss Universe scenario it was between Miss Columbia and Miss Jamaica, in history’s case, it was between the North and the South. Each side wanted a different outcome and only one side could win. In the end, the North and Miss Columbia won and the losing side had to deal with it. These trends continue throughout history and will, also, continue in the future.
On Sunday January 25, Philippine Police clashed with rebel forces in the remote town of Mamasapano. The eleven hour gun battle left forty-nine police and an unknown number of rebel fighters dead. The police entered the town while chasing two high profile terror suspects linked to recent bombings in the Philippines. The rebel forces, members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) occupying the town saw this as a direct violation of the current ceasefire terms and confronted the police. The rebels have been fighting for Muslim self-rule in certain southern provinces of this mostly Catholic country. This battle has been going on for a long time and has left tens of thousands dead. Peace negotiators for the MILF hope the current peace agreement will hold in spite of the recent fighting. The Philippines was once a United States territory and remains an ally today. The U.S. supports their allies in their fight against terrorism in many ways-political and military. Political support can come through advisers, negotiators and economic pressure. Military support can be the supplying of weapons, air strikes and soldiers on the ground. This support as the same as in the years before the U.S. entered the fighting in World War II. For many years supported its allies in Britain and Europe in their fight against Hitler’s armies in many different ways before actually sending soldiers to Europe and the Pacific to fight.
On Wednesday, January 7th, two masked gunmen fired shots inside of the French journalist company, Charlie Hebdo. The men snuck inside the building, asking for directions to the magazine office. They held cartoonist, Corinne Rey at gunpoint while they forced her to enter the code to the newsroom. A meeting had been going on when the French terrorists broke in. They asked for their targets and shot all 8 of them. They also killed a caretaker and a body guard. When they fled the scene, they were shouting things in Arabic like “God is great”. The gunmen were later on identified as Cherif and Said Kouachi. On the following day, another gunman had killed a policewoman and injured a man. French police had denied the connection between the two shootings at first, but were then later on connected. Later on, a man and a woman held an entire grocery store hostage, demanding that the Kouachi brothers be set free. Four victims were shot inside the supermarket. On January 9th, the manhunt for Cherif and Said Kouachi had ended. Police officials shot both of the suspects, they were pronounced dead. The police are trying to find links between the Charlie Hebdo attack and ISIS/al Qaeda.
The Charlie Hebdo shootings were an act of modern-day terrorism. This event could easily be connected to 1800’s abolitionist, John Brown. Brown believed that the only way to rid slavery was by rebellion. He planned to arm slaves with weapons but Robert E. Lee quickly shot his plan down. He had helped publish the “Call to Rebellion”. Brown was serious about freeing the slaves, and would do whatever it takes to make that happen. Brown visited a proslavery town and brutally murdered 5 people. At Harpers Ferry, John Brown had marched with his army of 21 people. The battle did not last long because they were highly outnumbered and many of Brown’s army was killed. Both of these events are similar because two specific groups of people were so passionate about something they believed in and took it too far, ending in death for innocent people.

On January 21, ISIS threatened to savagely kill two Japanese hostages in the same way, unless Tokyo paid $200 million within the next 72 hours. On January 26, a surviving Japanese hostage was forced to hold the head of a beheaded hostage in a photo. The hostage said that ISIS no longer wants the $200 million and that they wanted a prisoner swap instead. ISIS demanded the release of Sajida al-Rishawi, a female prison involved with al Qaeda suicide bombings. The U.S rushed to show aid and support Japan against ISIS. On January 27, ISIS showed brutality and threatened Obama and the hostages. No one has given in yet. The U.S. greatly supports Japan in this recent terrorism and hopes to help them. Supposedly, there is an American woman, also being held captive by ISIS, which is a great concern for America. The United States government today can be connected to the past government. In the past, at the end of the Civil War, the United States created amendments that supported the rights and safety of their people in greater ways. These amendments showed they didn't want slavery or servitude to exist for those who didn't deserve it and they wanted to protect those, freedmen, who were threatened by racists. The fact that the U.S. reacted so strongly to the ISIS terrorism shows how much the government still cares for the safety of people. To conclude, the role of the government from today and the past compare because the government has concerns for the safety of Americans and others. ~Michaela S.
Over the weekend, there were over twenty terroristic threats via twitter that targeted airlines such as Delta and Southwest. Many of these threats had evidence that they were linked to the terrorist organization Isis, with one tweet saying, "We are Isis, we are here." Although none of the planes were harmed, all of the threats were taken seriously, and all of the passengers on the planes went through heavy security and nothing was found. One plane on its way to Atlanta had to be escorted by fighter jets to its destination. Another plane, on its way from Los Angeles, to Orlando, had to make an emergency landing in Dallas/Fortworth airport. All threats mentioned bombs and all bags and passengers were checked and no bombs were found.
These threats are links to acts of terrorism, although these acts weren't actually carried out. An example of terrorism in the American Revolution was the Boston Tea Party. Shortly before the Boston Tea Party, there was a tax placed on tea by the British Empire that they tried to sneak past the American Colonists, but they weren't dumb enough to be fooled. So on the night of December 16, 1773, Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty boarded the ships that delivered the tea, and threw all of the crates of tea off of the ships and into the Boston Harbor. This is an act of terrorism by the Sons of Liberty towards the British Empire. This sent a message to the British Empire that America wanted freedom and wouldn't let the British stomp all over them. -Luke

The President states that he was doing this of the no man left behind policy/code which would be a better excuse then just denying that they are a terrorist group, but they have already done that and now that they have done both it looks suspicious. Even as they were explaining that the Taliban are not terrorists it slipped out that they were terrorists.
This is like how when the United States was entering its third President it saw the problem of slavery but they kept saying that it was not a problem and they kept leaving it to the side. Finally one brave president wanted to put an end to slavery permanently and that was during the civil war which was the bloodiest war in American history and it could have been resolved a lot easier in its early stages instead of letting it sit until this happened. If the United States ignores this problem like they did slavery it is going to get ugly. -Storm
Since the rudimentary beginnings of presidential elections, they have been a crucial part of our nation. The president is someone who is in charge of mostly all of the happenings in the country and all of our affairs in the beyond. This gives us the need to know that we are choosing the right box to check of on our ballot. Our current president has been with us for nearly six years, but in less than a single year, it will be the time to choose a new one to take his place in the presidential office. Obama referred to the upcoming elections in his state of the union address, talking about some of the popular possible candidates such as Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton. Even between these two people in the same party, there still comes competition for who should be the final candidate. This kind of competition has been around for a long time, and so has the need for a president that can aid the current political situation. The importance of the president and of the presidential elections has been around since even the first presidents. For example, when President Abraham Lincoln was elected, it was for the best of the country at the time. The conflicts between the North and the South were heating up, so Lincoln was chosen as the best person to try and settle them. He ended up being president through the civil war which he did do a very good job of being president during. The tactics he gave to his soldiers to use on the field and the tactics he came up with to use in office won the North the war and, essentially, free the slaves. This can go to show how important presidential elections can be.
